Southern Stisles Records: Press

S.G. Reviews

Unlike The Order who are a bit quirky, rapper SG is full on and so up front he's in your face. His album, Bonafied, is an underground slice of dirty South club hop that's laced with bangers, beats, and rhymes that are so no holds barred they'll probably leave a black eye. Bonafied is a testament to the power of hip hop and the versatility of being able to switch from the club to the street in the drop of a beat.

Bonafied is an impressive record that may not look like much on the cover, but on the inside it's a whole different story. Packed to rafters with stunning beats and so many crisp and cool rhymes the album is basically a non-stop barrage of verbiage that will leave you exhausted. SG is most impressive when the beats take him into the club and he's allowed to run with them. The first song on the album, "Eryday Hustle (All Night Grind)," is an awesome tune that's centered around an amazing synth led beat that will force even the worst wall flower to shake something. The song is like a big baseball bat that clobbers you on the head and then repeats the process until you get the point. The tune is a hit just waiting to break out and quite honestly about half of Bonafied is like that.

SG is good at what he does and when he's on it, he's clearly tapping into something primal, raw, and edgy; in fact, he's got the dirty south thing so down pat and you can almost feel the humidity coming off of this record. Name dropping politicians, cities, and states with a deft ability, SG shows himself that he knows the area rhyme after rhyme and isn't afraid to show it. At his worst, SG can sound kind cliche when the beats stop being strong but thankfully Bonafied for the most part is a strong effort. From the aforementioned, "Eryday Hustle (All Night Grind)," to the dark edge of, "Mind Games," SG is so close to massive success the contracts are building up. Bonafied is a good record from an artist just waiting for his time to come...which should be very soon.
Louisiana artist S.G. (S. Gizzle) was rapping by the age of 15 and already in the studio by age 18. Fast forward to now he’s in his late 20′s and ready to release his full-length debut on Southern Stisles Records.

Things start off on ‘Bonafied!’ with a 1-minute intro track with S.G. talking about his music. From track-2 forward S.G. lets the raps flow as he talks about living the, ‘The Southern G. Life,’ that revolves a lot around women.

S.G.’s raps flow smoothly like a hot knife cutting throw a stick of butter with their addictive rhymes and lyrics. His songs are also filled with a constant background beat that will rattle your speaker’s woofers. There’s also some sparse instrumentation found in the songs that works well too add little musical punches to the tracks.

Highlight tracks include, “Bad”(1st single) and “Take a Picture.” Several of the song also offers up featured artist, the best of them is the track, “Get Some Act Right.”

With the release of ‘Bonafied!’ S.G. shows that he’s a major player in the hip-hop music arena.
Up front full disclosure: I usually prefer listening to underground rather than mainstream hip-hop but "Bonafied!", the debut release from a southern rapper who goes by the handle of S.G. has me enthralled. His steady flow and phrasing comes across like a gansta all up in your face: hard and serious! But at the same time he can switch it up to a good time party vibe gear that took me totally by surprise.

"Bonafied!" has all the elements necessary that’ll make your speakers explode with a blast of beats and well written rhymes yet at the same time keeps your mind focused on S.G.‘s saga of moving up with his music on the southern streets. It’s a story set to a booming bass line with more than a few twists and turns along the way on the road he chose to go down. It’s a story of epic evolution. A tale of a young boy who blooms into bonafied hustla with some bad-ass and babes thrown in for good measure.

For me the tracks that amped my amp were "We Thug", "So Gansta" and "Mind Games". But again you should remember I lean toward more underground than mainstream. But there’s no denying that cuts like "So Fresh" (featuring Mr. Envi) and "Freaky Girl" will more than likely be certified radio classics as well as blast-off club bangers before long. And that fact is probably what will catapult S.G. to the top of the Game.

Tweeek - Def Sounds (Jun 1, 2010)
Tell us about where you are from and how you got to this position today.
– Born and raised in Shreveport, LA and have been rapping for some time now. Hooked up with Southern Stisles around 2005 and now I’m here.

What is the meaning of S.G.?
– What S.G. stands for, is something I want listeners to find out through my music.

Where did you get that?
– It’s a name I’ve gone by since I was young, and it sort of stuck with me.

What is the music scene like in your area?
– There is a lot of good artist in the Shreveport/ Bossier area. Ever since Hurricane Chris got his deal, there has been a lot of attention down here. The club scene is always jumping, one in particular KokoPelis and as of now the Orleone’s Bistro is one of the new hot spots to S.G. and Southern Stisles family.

Tell us about your new album.
– It’s hot. It’s got a new sound, hot production; overall it’s the hottest album dropping this summer. One of those types of albums you can always ride to. Kind of like Juvenile’s 400 degree’s as far as the playability. I mean that album you could put it in your player and just let it ride.

What does this project mean to you?
– It means a lot to me. A lot of work has been put into this album and I’m thankful I had an opportunity to do it. Man, there were a lot of obstacles in the way of us trying to get to this point and I know there are more to come, but starting off was pretty rough.

What is one of the most drastic changes you’ve made about yourself in the last year?
– None that I can think of at the moment. I’m sure I’ve made some adjustments, but none too drastic.

What would you spend you a million dollars on?
– Whenever S.G. earns a million dollars, I’ll let you know. (lol) That’s one of those types of questions that you really can’t answer. I mean, there is a lot I could do with a mil, but I’d try to put it to good use.

What was your biggest risk taken in your career?
– The making of this album “S.G. – Bonafied!”. A lot of decisions had to be made. Trying to maintain balance between making music and my personal life would be the biggest.

What suggestions do you have for other artists like yourself?
– Keep grinding, like one of verses in my song “Eryday Hustle (All Nite Grind)”, you’ve got to continue to do just that. Every day and all night you have to be on it 24/7, and don’t give up or become discouraged, because that’s the fastest way to end your career.

What’s one incident that would serve as a turning point to your life?
– A turning point for me would be to sell over one hundred thousand copies of my debut album independently. Now that will really be something.

What are the best ways to sell your products as an artist?
– To me it would have to be in person, because people get to see the real you. It’s like a retail salesman, the best salesmen are the ones who interact with their customers and build a relationship with them, so the next time they come to purchase something, they’ll look for the person who made them feel comfortable.

What is one of your favorite ways to promote yourself and your music?
– Live on stage is the best I think because experiencing S.G., it’s like watching football on TV or going to a game live. I mean, yeah, you get to see your favorite player on the screen, but you’re a lot more hype and energetic when you see them live in 3D.
CodeS.G. has recently dropped his newest album called BONAFIED! Actually, it's his debut album. So, I guess I should point out that he's an up and coming hip hop artist. Southern Stisles Records has signed this guy, and they're really pushin' him. He's got a great summer tour coming up, and I think he's coming through the South. Hell yeah!

Things have been looking bleak here, lately. For those of you who don't live in the Southern United States, this is the start of tornado season. Tornadoes are SOB's, otherwise known as SONS OF BITCHES. You never know where they're going to turn up, and what they're going to destroy. The good news is that you can see 'em comin' when they eventually do touch the ground. It's like lookin' up and seeing Godzilla in your city. Fuck that. Run. Take cover. It's seasons like this that I need to listen to some music that'll put me in the mood to run from tornadoes. It's seasons like this that I can listen to the newest album from S.G.

If I were to see a tornado tomorrow, I'd have this album probably programed to my IPOD. I'd start out by putting it on the track BAD. That's a good track to run from tornadoes. Once I find some sort of shelter, I'd have to cut to the track MIND GAMES. That gets me in the mood to freak out a tornado. It would wonder where I went to, and eventually just fuck up someone elses' house. I'd be hidin' in a shelter with the hot girl from down the street that all my friends want to get with (but her dad wants her to concentrate on her studies) and I'd then start blasting BONAFIED HUSTLA, GET SOME ACT RIGHT, SO FRESH, and SO GANGSTA. We'd end up gettin' it on right there in front of her daddy - but he'd be cool with it because he'd think it's the end of the world. All of a sudden his wife would start gettin' freaky with him while we listen to TAKE A PICTURE.

By the end of everything, we'd all be safe. Tornadoes are all scared of hip hop music. They'd get out of town and go back to being clouds. We'd be safe, due to the new S.G. album, Bonafied! Thanks, man!

Buy this album, and get saved from a tornado!
The southern rap scene seemed to be cooling off over the past couple of years. Well, you might want to grab a cold drink before listening to the south’s hottest new upcoming rapper. S.G. just released his debut album “Bonafied!,” on Southern Stisles Records. For those who are unfamiliar with the definition of “bonafied,” it means “like no other.” This album is definitely original with high energy beats and lyrics.

The introduction track on the album prepares you for the topics S.G. talks about in his music. Everyday is a hustle in this artist’s life, and he does not let you forget that. When he was just fifteen years old, he was freestyle battling at school to make a name for himself. Women also play a big role on the record; it seems that he is constantly being bothered by girls who can’t let him go. Hey, what do you expect when you are the south’s newest rap star?

Whether you are rocking by yourself, or having a party, this is the album you need. Every track has an undeniable energy, created by the hard hitting beats, and lyrics that are sure to get anybody hyped. If you enjoy the sound of Roland’s classic “808” kick drum, than you will love many of the tracks on the record including, “Eryday Hustle” and “Bad.” The female vocal in track 8 “Freaky Girl,” is almost erotic and really helps set the mood of the song.

Overall, I really enjoyed listening to this album. S.G. is sure to be a name that you are going to become very familiar with, if you are not already. No matter what style of hip hop music you listen to, “Bonafied!” is sure to be a pleasure for the ears. Now do yourself a favor and go buy a copy of the album!
Izzo - Hot Indie News (May 5, 2010)
When we think of Louisiana, we think of deep fried, rich, southern cooking. If your hip hop music soul
is in need of something satisfying, S.G. has just served some comfort food into your iPod.

“Bonafied!” is southern rapper S.G.’s debut release. Don’t be fooled though, he’s been free styling and performing at rap battles since he was in high school, and it shows.

This is a strong first effort from S.G. The first act to get signed to Southern Stisles Records, S.G. is an indie artist to keep an eye on in the years to come.

Ironically, in one of his more popular tracks
, “I’m Bad,” S.G. proclaims just that in the hook, and he raps a list of all the reasons he’s bad. So S.G. may be bad, but I’ll tell you what he isn’t. He’s not some cliché rapper trying to prove how bad he is by rappin’ about prison time, guns, and pimpin’ pens. He is not your typical hip hop artist who has the same 2 bar loop as his background beat. He’s going for the party music
vibe. After “Bonafied!” is released on June 1st, you’ll surely hear the Dj spinning it at your favorite club. I’m willing to bet that his career’s sophomore release will have the next urban club anthem on it!

ERed’s rating: B+
ERed - CD Insight (Apr 30, 2010)
We received the debut album from S.G., "Bonafied!" and several of my staff members gave it a spin. The singles were strong in the club dance area ("Freaky", "Bad" and "So Fresh") but what surprised us the most was it was like we were each feeling a different style from it.

Some compared S.G. to Gucci Mane's Alabama club bangers sound. Some compared "Bonafied!" to early 50 Cent east coast tracks. Others compared S.G. to Cali rapper Too $hort's "special requests".

While "Bonafied!" is not the hard hitting underground sound coming out of Hip Hop hot spots like Milwaukee these days this Louisiana rapper earned our respect as a legit club banging Bro.

On a scale of 1-10 "Bonafied!" notches a notable number 9.

S.G. just dropped his debut album “Bonafied!,” and it has Hip Hop heads looking down south. The CD has twelve hard knocking tracks that are sure to get the ladies dropping it low on the dance floor. S.G. hits on some serious topics as well which listeners will appreciate. Every day is full of hustling and grinding for this MC and he brings you to his world through the music. There are guest appearance on tracks 3,6,9,11, and 12 from Bigg Redd, JB, Mr. Envi, and JTL.
Massive bass and tight crisp highs bring the instrumentals to life on “Bonafied!” You can definitely tell there from the dirty south, but they have they’re own unique flavor to them that I think everyone will jam to. S.G. tears up every beat lyrically with a cool relaxed confidence, especially on track 2, “Eryday Hustle.” He spits pure flames as he describes his twenty-four hour grinding life style. He lets you know just how “bad” he is on track 5, with a hook so catchy you might wake up in the morning reciting it. This is the type of CD that makes you want to drive slow with the bass turned up, rocking a gangster lean like your reaching into the glove box.
This album has been in my deck since I got my hands on it, I can’t seem to turn it off. Every track blends into each other perfectly, and the gangster theme is never forgotten. That’s because S.G. is a true street cat, you can tell from his rhymes that he has experienced a lot and isn’t someone to mess around with. The introduction on “Bonafied!” shows his sense of humor, with a redneck trying to understand the life of a street hustler. Gangsters have to laugh too ya know!
It is hard to believe that this is a debut album. S.G. flexes rhymes like he’s been in the game for decades. “Bonafied!” is sure to please the club crowd, as well as the lonely fan listening with headphones on. I’ve been bumping this album for about a month now, and I’m still catching new sounds and lyrics in each song. The south definitely got a little dirtier and hotter with this release, go out and grab a copy you won’t be disappointed!
